Boot the Ubuntu LiveCD via USB

Postby tuxuser » Tue Mar 08, 2011 10:32 pm

It's pretty easy to accomplish that.

1. Format a USB-Flash or HDD in FAT32.
2. Extract the ISO of the LiveCD with any compatible program.. or mount it as a loopdrive in linux
3. Copy the whole content to the Root of the USB Drive
4. Rename vmlinux to xenon.elf
5. Boot it with the XeLL of your choice
6. Enjoy a faster boot :)
I have no idea what I am doing but atleast I am trying

Good morning everybody!

Thanks for the instruction!

I am booting xell-reloaded and Ubuntu 10.10 BETATEST via Xell-Launch and without renaming vmlinux. Works too using a USB drive. Maybe not that fast. I am going to check that out soon.

Or are you talking about an unmodified Ubuntu LiveCD?

Add this right after the try_boot_fat for xenon.elf in xell if you are too lazy to rename the file every time.

Code: Select all

try_boot_fat("vmlinux");

I can't get this to work at all.

Formatted usb drive to fat32
Extracted 10.10 to usb drive so I have casper folder and linux file which I rename to xenon.bin
Copied xellLaunch folder to usb drive
Copied xell-2f.bin file to xellLaunch folder on usb drive and renamed to xell.bin

I then run the default.xex and I get a black screen for 5 seconds before being returned to freestyle dash.

I've tried a usb stick and a usb hard drive and neither work.

Any ideas?

Two Things are wrong:

1. Rename the vmlinux to xenon.elf, not xenon.bin
2. You need Dash Launch installed for the XeLL-Launch to work. Dash Launch 2.21 is the latest, use the XeLL-Launch included with it.

I think I have dash launch installed already. I think version 2.20 but I'll check

Its a matter of THE COMBINATION of dash launch + xell-launch.

THEY HAVE TO MATCH!
